Requirements

  • Basic Linux command line experience (or a CentOS Stream lab you are building)
  • No lab is needed to take the tests

Description

Do you run CentOS Linux servers – or are you about to? These practice tests check the knowledge a Linux administrator uses every day: the command line, Vim and Bash scripts, users, permissions and sudo, processes, systemd services, SSH, logging and scheduled jobs, and the packages, networking, storage and boot process of a CentOS Stream server.

You get 4 practice tests with 200 questions in total (50, 50, 50, 50). Every question was checked twice before release: once by the author against the official documentation, and once by an independent reviewer who answered it blind – any disagreement was settled with a source.

What makes the explanations useful

Each answer tells you why the right option is right and why each wrong option is wrong. The wrong options are real features, commands and settings that are easy to pick by mistake – that is where most of the learning is.

How the tests are built

  • Practice Test 1: Command Line, Vim and Bash Scripting: file system navigation and file commands, links, wildcards, man pages, find, tar and compression, grep and sed, redirection and pipes, Vim, Bash history, aliases and scripts.
  • Practice Test 2: Users, Permissions, Processes and Services: users, groups and password aging, sudo, permissions, umask, special permissions and ACLs, processes and signals, systemd services and timers, SSH, journald, cron, chrony and tuned.
  • Practice Test 3: Packages, Networking, Storage and Boot: RPM and DNF repositories, IPv4 and subnetting, nmcli, partitions and swap, LVM, XFS, Stratis, VDO, NFS and fstab, kernel modules, GRUB 2, systemd targets and root password reset.
  • Practice Test 4: Full Mock Exam: a mixed exam across all three areas – take it last, in one sitting.

Questions use single-answer and multiple-answer formats; the number of answers to pick is always stated. Suggested time: 75 minutes per test.

Versions: CentOS Stream 9 and CentOS Stream 10 (RHEL 9 / RHEL 10 compatible; CentOS Linux 7 and 8 have reached end of life), systemd, NetworkManager/nmcli, DNF/YUM and RPM, LVM, XFS/ext4, Stratis, VDO, NFS, chrony, journald/rsyslog, Bash 5, as of October 2026.

Please note: these are original practice questions written by an instructor. This course is not affiliated with or endorsed by Red Hat; CentOS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux are Red Hat trademarks.
