Requirements

  • An intermediate (B1) level of English or above — Test 1 opens with exam staples, but the arc climbs to literary C1/C2
  • No prior competitive-exam experience needed — every question format is explained before it tests you

Description

Idioms and phrases are the most scoreable marks on an English paper—until they aren’t. Exams rarely ask “what does X mean?” in the way a dictionary answers it. They hide the idiom in a sentence, blank out a word in a fixed phrase, or ask which option is the closest paraphrase. Each format punishes a different weakness.

This course trains all four formats with 6 full-length practice tests, 100 questions each, covering 600 idioms in total—with not one idiom repeated anywhere in the course.

How Each 100-Question Test Is Built:

  • Idiom Meaning (25 questions): Select the most appropriate meaning of the given idiom.

  • Idiom in Context (25 questions): The idiom is buried in a full sentence; you pick the sense that fits it.

  • Idiom Completion (25 questions): Fill in the missing word of a fixed phrase with the exact word exams expect.

  • Closest Paraphrase (25 questions): Given a plain-English paraphrase, choose the idiom that means it.

A Difficulty Curve, Not Six Identical Tests:

  • Tests 1-2 run on frequently-asked core staples while your accuracy settles.

  • Tests 3-4 begin the ramp into mid-tier and classic-list idioms.

  • Tests 5-6 retire the easy material entirely, featuring literary and advanced phrases from previous-year question pools and ending in a challenge final.

You can measure real progress by which tests you pass (80% to pass) and where your score first dips.

Every Option Explained — Not Just the Right One:
This is the difference between practising and improving. All 600 questions ship with a written explanation for the correct answer and for each of the three distractors—the literal reading that traps you, the near-miss phrase, the opposite meaning. The traps are built honestly: no distractor ever means the same thing as the right answer, so elimination genuinely works.

600 Idioms, Zero Repeats:
If you meet an idiom once in this course, you meet it once—as a target, never recycled. That makes the six scores a true measure across a 600-idiom bank, not six overlapping quizzes.

British Spelling Throughout, Exams in Mind:
Competitive-exam English accepts both conventions; this course consistently teaches one (UK) so you never confuse yourself mid-test.

What’s Included:

  • 6 timed, full-length practice tests (100 questions each, 100 minutes recommended).

  • 600 written explanations for correct answers, plus 1,800 distractor explanations.

  • 600 unique idioms and phrases: core exam staples, mid-tier classics, previous-year pools, and literary phrases.

  • Pass mark: 80% per test; unlimited retakes.

  • Lifetime access, including future question refreshes.

Take Test 1 to set your baseline, and Test 6 the week before the real thing. If you can pass the final test, no idioms-and-phrases section can surprise you.
