What you'll learn

  • Ace system design interviews with a repeatable four-step framework you can use for any question
  • Design real systems like WhatsApp, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Drive and Instagram’s feed, step by step
  • Design scalable systems that grow from one server to millions of users
  • Master load balancing, caching, CDNs, database replication and sharding for high-traffic applications
  • Choose between SQL and NoSQL databases and explain the trade-offs out loud in your interview
  • Estimate traffic, storage and capacity for large-scale systems with simple back-of-the-envelope math
  • Know what interviewers really look for, what to ask first, and how to manage your 45 minutes
  • Use message queues, consistent hashing, rate limiters and stateless servers to build reliable systems
  • Understand AI system design by designing a chatbot: tokens, GPUs, streaming, prompt caching and token rate limits
  • Learn from real public postmortems how large systems fail and how to keep them running
  • Understand every term in plain words, even if you’ve never designed a large system before

Description

Get ready for your system design interview with a course that finally ties all the pieces together. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced engineer, this course takes you from a single server to designing large-scale distributed systems, with every concept animated step by step.

I made this course because I couldn’t find the one I needed. Everything I found explained one piece at a time. Nothing tied those pieces to each other, and nothing gave me a framework I could always come back to and think through when I was in an interview. Some of these concepts were really hard for me to learn, and those are the parts I worked hardest to make easy for you. I’m an engineering manager and I run these interviews, so all the way through I’ll tell you what interviewers could ask, what you need to know well, and when to use each thing.

In the Foundations section, you’ll start with one server and one user, and see how a request reaches a server through DNS, HTTP and APIs. You’ll choose between relational and NoSQL databases, learn vertical and horizontal scaling, and then add load balancers, database replication, caching, CDNs, stateless servers, data centers, message queues, logging, metrics and sharding, until your system can handle millions of users.

Next, you’ll learn to think at scale. You’ll get comfortable with data sizes, latency and availability, and then work through a full estimation using WhatsApp as the example, so you can do the math out loud in an interview.

Then you’ll learn the four-step framework you can use for any design question: ask questions first, propose a high-level design, go into a deep dive, and wrap up. You’ll also see what interviewers actually look for and how to manage your time.

From there, you’ll put that framework to work on 16 real-world case studies. You’ll design a rate limiter, a key-value store, a unique ID generator, a URL shortener, a web crawler, a notification system, Instagram’s feed, WhatsApp, search autocomplete, YouTube, Google Drive, a “what’s near me” search, live location sharing, Google Maps, a message queue and an AI chatbot. Along the way, you’ll learn important techniques like consistent hashing, and the trade-offs behind every choice.

The course ends by designing an AI chatbot, where you’ll see tokens and GPUs explained with no math, why answers appear word by word, how one GPU gets shared, rate limits when requests aren’t equal, prompt caching, and what real public postmortems teach us.

One story connects everything: the same bookstore and the same characters keep coming back, so every new idea ties to the ones before it. Nothing is assumed, and every term and tool gets a plain explanation before we rely on it. You get over 21 hours of video across 20 chapters, with a quiz after every lecture and captions on every lecture.

Whether you’re preparing for your next interview or you just want to understand how big systems really work, this course will give you a way of thinking you can use for your whole career. Enroll now, and let’s get you interview ready.

Who this course is for:

  • Software engineers preparing for system design interviews at top tech companies
  • Mid-level developers aiming for senior roles, where system design interviews often carry more weight
  • Backend, frontend and mobile developers who want to understand how large-scale systems are built
  • Computer science students and new graduates who want a head start on system design interviews
  • Engineers who keep struggling with open-ended interview questions and want a repeatable way to approach them
