Requirements

  • Basic familiarity with Linux (or a SLES or openSUSE VM you are learning on)
  • No lab is needed to take the tests

Description

Are you starting out with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server? These practice tests check the knowledge a SLES administrator uses every day: installing the system and working with YaST, managing software with zypper and SUSE modules, rolling back changes with Snapper, configuring the network and the firewall, and the command line basics – files, the shell, Vim, users and permissions.

You get 4 practice tests with 160 questions in total (40, 40, 40, 40). Every question was checked twice before release: once by the author against the official documentation, and once by an independent reviewer who answered it blind – any disagreement was settled with a source.

What makes the explanations useful

Each answer tells you why the right option is right and why each wrong option is wrong. The wrong options are real features, commands and settings that are easy to pick by mistake – that is where most of the learning is.

How the tests are built

  • Practice Test 1: Installation, YaST and System Administration: SLES installation and Btrfs partitioning, YaST and the sysconfig editor, time zone and host name, systemd and journalctl, Snapper snapshots and rollback.
  • Practice Test 2: Software, Networking and Security: zypper, repositories and priorities, patches and patterns, rpm queries, SUSEConnect modules, wicked networking, firewalld, AppArmor, sudo and SSH.
  • Practice Test 3: Command Line, Files, Users and Permissions: man and info pages, the file system hierarchy, /etc/fstab, bash variables, globbing, aliases and redirection, Vim, users, groups and permissions.
  • Practice Test 4: Full Mock Exam: a mixed exam across all three areas – take it last, in one sitting.

Questions use single-answer and multiple-answer formats; the number of answers to pick is always stated. Suggested time: 60 minutes per test.

Versions: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP5-SP7 (YaST, zypper, SUSEConnect, wicked, firewalld, AppArmor, Btrfs and Snapper, systemd), with notes on what changed in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 16, as of October 2026.

Please note: these are original practice questions written by an instructor. This course is not affiliated with or endorsed by SUSE; SUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server are SUSE trademarks.
